As we scale, we are seeking an experienced Senior Manager to join our leadership team. This role will play a critical part in overseeing client engagements, ensuring quality control, mentoring staff, and providing high-level technical expertise. Position Overview
The Senior Manager will oversee complex tax compliance, tax strategy, and client advisory services, with a strong emphasis on tax planning for business owners. The role also includes financial statement preparation, with approximately 60-70% of the responsibilities focused on tax-related tasks and 30-40% dedicated to financial statement preparation. This position involves direct client interactions, including meetings and presentations to executives and boards, and providing high-level tax and financial guidance. You will lead and mentor a team of accountants, ensuring the accuracy, compliance, and efficiency of tax filings while advising clients on proactive tax planning and strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Leadership & Tax Advisory
- Serve as the primary point of contact for key clients, leading discussions on tax strategy, planning, and long-term business goals.
- Provide strategic tax guidance to business owners, including tax-saving strategies, entity structuring, and proactive tax planning to minimize liabilities.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships, offering insights to drive tax-related decision-making.
- Lead client meetings and presentations to executives and boards, ensuring tax-related information is communicated clearly and effectively.
- Advise business owners on tax planning opportunities, such as deductions, credits, and strategies to optimize cash flow and profitability.
Tax Compliance & Oversight
- Review and sign federal and state tax returns for clients, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant regulations.
- Oversee the preparation and timely filing of individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns.
- Monitor and review complex tax filings, including multi-state filings, tax credits, and specialized returns.
- Act as the lead on tax research and technical issues requiring senior-level expertise, ensuring that all tax filings are accurate and compliant.
- Ensure that tax systems and processes are operating efficiently, recommending improvements where necessary.
IRS & Compliance Management
- Manage IRS inquiries, audits, and resolutions, ensuring the firm’s clients are properly represented.
- Serve as the firm’s lead resource for complex tax issues, including handling advanced tax planning, research, and compliance matters.
- Stay up to date with tax laws, regulations, and best practices, ensuring the firm and clients are fully compliant.
Tax Planning for Business Owners
- Develop tailored tax strategies for business owners, helping them navigate complex tax rules and optimize their tax position.
- Advise on strategies for business structure, retirement planning, and executive compensation to minimize tax exposure.
- Provide tax projections and planning for major business events such as expansions, acquisitions, and transitions.
- Guide clients on tax-efficient use of business income, including opportunities for tax credits, deductions, and capital structure planning.
- Prepare and Review Quarterly Estimated Tax payments for clients
Financial Statement Preparation & Oversight
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for clients, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with accounting standards.
- Work closely with clients to ensure that financial statements reflect true business performance and provide insights into financial health.
- Ensure financial statements align with tax filings and compliance requirements.
- Guide clients through financial statement analysis, helping them make informed business decisions based on financial data.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and train accounting staff on tax compliance, financial statement preparation, and tax planning best practices, fostering professional growth.
- Review and provide clear feedback to ensure technical excellence, accuracy, and efficiency in tax-related and financial statement tasks.
- Manage workloads, delegate tasks, and ensure team accountability to meet deadlines during tax season and throughout the year.
High-Level Tax Strategy & Analysis
- Lead tax planning and strategy for clients, including structuring, forecasting, and tax-saving initiatives.
- Collaborate with clients and leadership to ensure alignment on tax goals and strategy.
- Review and oversee tax-related financial analysis, ensuring proper tax impact considerations are made in financial decision-making.
- Implement quality control standards to ensure accurate tax filings and financial statements, maintaining the firm’s reputation for excellence in tax and financial services.
Qualifications
- Experience
- 7+ years of progressive experience in accounting or tax, ideally in a CPA firm or client services environment.
- Proven experience managing client relationships and delivering senior-level financial and tax advisory services.
- Previous experience handling IRS audits, inquiries, and complex tax matters.
- Skills & Knowledge
- Strong understanding of GAAP, tax regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, review, and improve accounting workflows.
- Excellent communication skills—able to translate complex financial concepts into actionable insights for clients and staff.
- Proficiency in accounting and tax software (QuickBooks Online required; Xero, Drake, ProConnect, or similar preferred).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple clients and priorities.
- Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
